THE MURDER OF GEORGE PAYTON - POLITICIAN AND CIVIL RIGHTS AND CRIMINAL ATTORNEY
PART 1 JUDGE RICHARD FIELD’S OFFICE MARCH 18, 1975
The prominent Charleston civil rights lawyer and former candidate for State Senate, and Congress sat in the Spring Street offices he shared with Judge Richard Fields working all day. The Friday before he was in court defending Willis Knight Jr for murder. Knight was convicted for murder. On Payton’s last day on earth, he was already working on the appeal for Knight. Judge Fields, then a Family Court Judge was not in the office at the time.
On Tuesday afternoon at about 2 PM, a tall dark-skinned African American male, who was around 40 years old, walked into Spring street office and approached the secretary identifying himself as James Walker and asking to see Payton. The secretary told him to take a seat. Shortly after the man asked to use the restroom. The secretary gave permission and the man walked down the corridor toward the restroom. At about 2:50 PM the secretary heard gunfire and the man walked calmly out of the office.
When the secretary and as I recall another employee rushed into the office Payton was found behind his desk. The Charleston County Coroner determined that Payton died instantly of a single gunshot to his head.
A police investigation later revealed that Payton was on the phone with Beaufort Attorney Joab Dowling Jr. Dowling claimed he knew nothing of his work in Beaufort nor any motive for the murder.
Payton had been working on a land deal in Beaufort County at the time of his death. The police had a number of leads at the time and went to Beaufort, Hilton Head Island, and Washington DC. Speculation at the time revolved around the land deal Payton was handling.
