First Red Scare (1917–1920): Woodrow Wilson was president during this period, which followed World War I and was fueled by the Russian Revolution and fears of Bolshevism spreading to the U.S. His administration oversaw actions like the Palmer Raids, led by Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer, targeting suspected radicals.

Second Red Scare (1947–1957): This period, often associated with McCarthyism, spanned the presidencies of Harry S. Truman (1945–1953) and Dwight D. Eisenhower (1953–1961). Truman dealt with early Cold War tensions and implemented loyalty programs to root out communists in government. Eisenhower was president during the height of Senator Joseph McCarthy’s influence.
