I spoke at the Booker T Washington 100 year anniversary some years ago at Tuskegee University. I learned there how today we can stop this racial inequity in education and criminal justice. All politicians, including CCSD political board members, are dependent on votes to be re-elected. Where are black community leaders like 1881’s former slave Lewis Adams and white politicians like White Democratic Alabama Senate Candidate F.W. Foster in 2021????? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_Adams
Before the black community got the right to vote they were banned from being educated except for religious instruction. It actually was illegal in some southern states. After the 1831 revolt of Nat Turner in Virginia, even the free blacks were banned from education in some states.
It wasn't until the white Alabama politicians needed the black vote that black community leaders realized they now possessed the power of the vote. They saw the opportunity to trade black education for black votes. The Tuskegee Institute was born under the guidance of Booker T Washington. Tuskegee played a vital role in proving black people were equal in every way to white people. George Washington Carver led an agricultural revolution and the Red Tails proved to be equal and even better than white pilots.
According to US News and World Report, Charleston County School District contains 82 schools and 49,769 students. The district’s minority enrollment is 60%. Also, 57.2% of students are economically disadvantaged. However 50% of black 4rth graders
underperformed according to CCSD’s 2021 figures.
