Dear Dr. Carol Swain, Robert L. Woodson, Sr., Tanya Woodson Monestel,
I am honored to attend your 'Black Conservatives & Race in America' event in Franklin, TN on November 19. I have worked with The Hon. Nikki Haley, Dr. Carl Evans (University of SC Religious Studies) and Evangelical Lutheran Church of America Bishop Hernman Yoos to establish Interfaith Partners of South Carolina.
It is my hope that the Be the People Project at the 'Black Conservatives & Race in America' event in Franklin, TN will foster a national racial harmony/equal education effort resulting in a bipartisan team. We'd like to bring in as many Black Conservatives as possible to educate the people of South Carolina on what they need to do to break the vicious cycle of substandard test scores and general low-quality education of the black students across the state.
With the help of Dr.Helen Frazier of the Charleston County School District Board of Directors, we would like to bring equal education to all students natyionwide and hope that Dr. Swain and the good people at the Woodson Center will inspire us and our leaders in South Carolina to make improvements with the tools available for us to make sure future generations of children are not left behind because of poor education standards..
As a South Carolina representative at the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition program with Congress in Washington, D.C. several years ago, I proposed a variation of this concept to a number of Congress and Senate Representatives. In particular, I spoke with a Colorado Congressman who asked if he could bring this idea to the Democratic Black Caucus. South Carolina U.S. Senator Tim Scott, could also be an important asset if I can interest those at Franklin to move forward.
I would suggest we reconvene in Charleston with an expanded number of people from both parties with a national reach. Congressman Neguse and Senator Scott as well as local Democratic State Representative Wendell Gilliard and Republican Chair Maurice Washington as well as local Racial Justice Network Leader Elder James Johnson could kick off a national effort from Charleston, SC.
I have included a local 4th grade assessment of the education failures as well as a few efforts we've made in Charleston. Our goal is to create an equal education to erase the 1967 to 2021 educational fate of black students.
Sincerely,
Howard G. Comen
