CHARLESTON COUNTY SCHOOLS A NATIONAL DISGRACE
48% of Black Kids Underperform in Charleston SC by 4rth Grade
6 to 8 % of White Kids Underperform by 4rth Grade
While Charleston Boasts the number 2 High School in the Country
Most Murderers in North Charleston have 10th grade education or less
"In elementary schools, Negroes lag one to three years behind whites, and their segregated schools receive substantially less money per student than do the white schools.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, 1967
[W]hite students score an average of 1.5 to 2-grade levels higher than black students in the average district.” – Reardon, et al., 2019
We boast the number 2 Magnet High School in the Nation, yet only 3.7 % of students are black while the number of black students underperforming in Charleston County Schools as early as 4rth grade is over 50% and climbing. The Coastal Community Foundation has stepped up to the plate to develop a framework to pull our black students out of these unacceptable circumstances. I am sick and tired of listening to people who have done nothing to rectify this tragedy since Dr. King's 1967 speech hammer Mr. Goss and Dr. Helen Frazier. Goss simply has developed a framework for these underserved communities to come forward and develop their own solutions. As I understand it Goss's plan calls for 31 Million of the District's funding to be redistributed to underperforming schools in their four school districts. Goss has invested time and foundation money to develop this strategy. He has put his money and his foundation where his mouth is. Goss and his foundation will let these underserved communities help develop their own way forward, something CCSD has failed to do at every turn. As I understand it only $50,000 per year of these CCSD funds would go to the Foundation to cover Foundation costs over two years.
In a Zoom Meeting with close to 100 District 23 constituents including principals, teachers, parents, and community and church leaders Goss answered many questions and misinformation I have seen posted on chat rooms and websites. A number of detractors were present at the Zoom Meeting. I hope you all can grasp the urgency of this educational calamity, help develop the solution, and stop continuing to support the problem.
On January 7th beginning at 4:30 PM, Mr. Goss will be joined by CCSD Board Member Lauren Heterich and Dr. Carol Tempel.
